THE CHARM OF ENGLISH DOORS
Isabel and I left the UK with more photos of front doors than we could count. Each one more charming than the last. From Georgian townhouses to countryside cottages, they were all different, yet equally beautiful. Painted in bold or chalky tones, framed by climbing roses, and dressed in elegant hardware, these doors all lent a sense of character and history that’s hard to come by in most newer homes.
Other than the picturesque corners of Palm Beach, you don’t often see doors like that here in South Florida. But we’re determined to change that one home at a time. Here are a few ways to bring the charm of English doors to your own front entry:
Elevate The Doorframe
English doors often feel grand because they’re thoughtfully framed sometimes in limestone, sometimes with a detailed profile. You can achieve a similar effect by trimming your door in cast stone or using a more sculptural stucco surround. It adds a sense of permanence and makes the entry feel intentional.
2. Pattern Path
In many English homes, the steps or entry portico are tiled in patterns that add both personality and warmth. Incorporating patterned tile or unique stonework at your front step is a small detail that creates a welcoming, layered look from the moment you arrive.
3. Add Character with Thoughtful Hardware
It’s the little things that make a big impression. A timeless door knocker like this classic ring-style one we recently sourced from the UK adds instant charm. Pair it with elegant house numbers and substantial entry hardware in aged brass or oil-rubbed bronze. These details anchor the door and give it a sense of history and intention.
4. Be Bold with Color
Color is one of the easiest (and most impactful) ways to add character. English doors often embrace rich, statement-making hues from oxblood red to powder blue. Look to brands like Farrow & Ball or Little Greene Paint for beautifully pigmented options that elevate any front door.
5. Let the Garden Climb
Nothing softens and elevates a front entry quite like climbing plants. In England, it’s not uncommon to see a door framed by rambling roses or clematis in full bloom. Here in Florida, you might opt for bougainvillea or jasmine. Bonus points if the bloom color complements your door or home’s exterior palette.
Great design takes time and your front door deserves the same attention as any other part of your home. Whether you're building from scratch or simply refreshing what’s already there, these small, thoughtful changes can make a world of difference.
